STUDENT VOICES: TEEN ADDICTION - Watch Full Program
Saturday, Dec. 15 at 8PM

According to a recent survey, almost 50% of high school seniors have experimented with an illegal drug and 35 million families in the U.S. have children at risk of abusing drugs and alcohol. How informed are you? And what can you do to help a friend, or even yourself? These are just some of the questions we explore in a special one hour edition of COMCAST STUDENT VOICES. Produced in association with PARTNERSHIP FOR A DRUG FREE AMERICA, the program examines the serious issue of TEEN ADDICTION.

In our studio, seven students SPEAK OUT! to host BRIAN HARPER about the issue and, with the help of guest experts, they get to BRAINSTORM some solutions. The studio discussion is driven by a mini-documentary that weaves together frightening facts about addiction and candid interviews with two recovering addicts: Valerie started using drugs at 14 and by the age of 15 she was homeless, addicted to heroin and doing every kind of drug she could get her hands on; Joshua dropped out of high school, became addicted to methamphetamine and sold drugs to survive. Their emotional stories provide sobering proof of how drug experimentation can lead to drug dependence and ultimately destroy one's future.

The program also tackles the use and abuse of Party Drugs like Ecstasy and the latest Teen Epidemic: Prescription Medication and Cough Medicine Abuse.

To wrap things up, we showcase a unique anti-drug initiative to illustrate how teens can TAKE ACTION! The Crazy James Band is comprised of recovering teen addicts and the brainchild of Road Recovery, a New York based group. Through education, live performance and action programs, their goal is to communicate a strong message to teens and young adults about the benefits of a substance-free life.

GUEST EXPERTS:

  • BECKY VANCE: A Regional Manager for Partnership for a Drug Free America who shares her own personal addiction issues and how drugs almost ruined her life.
  • ATTORNEY GENERAL JOHN SUTHERS: Who created a Methamphetamine Task Force in 2006 to combat the methamphetamine epidemic in Colorado.
  • JAYSON GADDIS: He is a certified addiction therapist who has been working with teens and young adults since 1991.

STUDENT VOICES: Internet Safety - Watch Full Program
Saturday, Dec. 15 at 9PM

American teenagers are more wired now than ever before. In fact, ninety-nine percent of all teens use the internet. And while it’s a great resource, especially for students, there is a dark side.

That’s why Comcast and the cable industry is committed to a code of conduct to help users make the right choices. Despite the safeguards, sexual predators and cyber bullies remain a serious threat and many teens are making the wrong choices.

What can parents do to protect their teens from sexual predators and cyber bullying? Can tougher laws make a difference? And what can be done … by teens … to create awareness?

These are just some of the questions we explore in a special edition of COMCAST STUDENT VOICES. Produced in association with POINT SMART, CLICK SAFE & I KEEP SAFE, the program examines the serious issue of INTERNET SAFETY.

In our studio, six students SPEAK OUT! to host BRIAN HARPER about the issue and, with the help of guest experts, they get to BRAINSTORM some solutions.

The studio discussion will be driven by “THE KACIE RENE WOODY STORY,” the compelling account of a fourteen year old girl’s tragic encounter with an on-line sexual predator. The reporter is Kacie’s best friend, Kelsie Brown, who produced the piece as a tribute to her dear friend.

The film and Kacie’s rape and murder have inspired Kelsie to TAKE ACTION in an effort to educate other teens about on-line predators and cyber bullies. That’s why she carries her message to schools and shares her story along with safety tips for teens and parents.

GUEST EXPERTS:

  • MARSALI HANCOCK: as President of the Internet Keep Safe Coalition, she speaks internationally on internet safety and security issues.
  • PHIL BRIMMER: Chief of the Colorado US Attorney's Office Special Prosecutions Section, which oversees computer crime and child exploitation.
